Stream of consciousness...

Cause Of Life

It's a man's world, still, even with more women in the workplace, women CEO's, women in government, women controlling the household spending, women doing just about every job a man does...only backwards in high heels! Don't get me wrong, I love men. I've spent most of my life trying to figure out how to live with them. At this point, I wonder if I'll ever get it right!

As a woman, I've learned to respect and emulate people who I admire and most of those just happen to be women. Well duh, but, for the longest time, I thought guys had the better deal in life and thought it a terrible injustice that I was born female.

Coming of age in the 70's wasn't exactly the most liberating of times, as ceiling busting wasn't even on the radar, let alone equal pay for equal jobs. Most men thought women should just stay home and raise the kiddies, like their moms all did. And many women thought so, too.

As a young girl, I used to love reading biographies, especially about strong women. There weren't tons of them to be found. Role models were found in the form of queens, saints and artists who were mostly single, childless women. The term "spinster" even sounds sinister,
some evil shrivelled old woman who cooks children in pots, or offers them poisoned apples.

Is it any wonder that girls had a tough time trying to define themselves outside of the traditional role as wife/mother?

Every fairy tale could only end happily with the prince saving the young woman from a fate worse than death: singledom.

It is more than gratifying to know that young women today live happily, single with no plans to marry, settle down and have their own little ones to raise. Not that child-rearing isn't the most challenging, important and rewarding of jobs...just not for everyone.
